THREE GENERATIONS OF WINEMAKING EXPERIENCE

Marty Clubb is Managing Winemaker and Co-Owner of L’Ecole N° 41 with his wife, Megan, and children, Riley and Rebecca.  This family-owned artisan winery was founded by Megan’s parents, Jean and Baker Ferguson, in 1983.

In 1989, Marty and Megan took a leap of faith and moved to Walla Walla permanently, where Marty assumed responsibilities as manager and winemaker of L’Ecole.  Since that time, he has led L’Ecole to become one of the most respected wineries in Washington State.

Marty and Megan’s adult children, Riley and Rebecca, have both been involved in winery operations and represent the third generation of L’Ecole!

“Like every great growing region around the globe, Washington’s success is tied back to its vineyards and the diversity of the landscape allowing us to grow a variety of grapes exceedingly well.”

Vineyards of L'Ecole Nº41

Featured below are a few of L’Ecole’s vineyards. L’Ecole works with many exceptional, established vineyards in the Walla Walla and Columbia Valley to produce their reliable, consistent, award-winning wines.

COLUMBIA VALLEY

Washington’s largest viticultural region, Columbia Valley, covers almost 11 million acres, representing a full third of Washington State’s land mass. In the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, the Columbia Valley is dry, sunny, and warm (Geology, Climate). Yakima Valley is the largest sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley, both in total size and planted acreage, with the valley home to over one quarter of Washington’s total grape vine acreage.

L’Ecole contracts with a number of prestigious, mature vineyards, each with a high-level focus on quality. Many of these vineyards were planted in the 1970s and early 1980s. They work with the same blocks and rows of fruit each year, managed to their specifications, which contribute significantly to the trustworthy reputation of L’Ecole’s  wines vintage after vintage.

CHENIN BLANC 2021

L’Ecole N° 41 has produced this old vine, crisp and aromatic Vouvray-style Chenin Blanc since 1987.

With pronounced aromatics which range from citrus peel to fresh stone fruit, laced with white floral flourishes, it is vibrant and energetic. In the mouth, flavors burst forward with tropical kiwi and guava, completed by a snappy quince note. An exceedingly interesting and tasty wine, its complexity persists to a vibrant finish.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2019

For over 30 years, L’Ecole has built long term partnerships with the oldest and most proven vineyards, providing access to some of the best fruit in the Columbia Valley.  With average vine age of more than 20 years, this wine shows a classic Cabernet Sauvignon profile of firm structure, integrated tannins, and dark expressive fruit.

Frenchtown Red Wine 2020 bottle
FRENCHTOWN RED 2020

Frenchtown, Walla Walla Valley’s first settlement, was founded by French Canadians in the early 1800s. A thriving viticulture and wine making community was established in the Valley by the 1860s. This Frenchtown wine salutes these pioneers. With the highest quality in mind, this blend offers exceptional value for its price.

FERGUSON VINEYARD

Ferguson Vineyard, named in honor of founders Jean and Baker Ferguson, is a 42-acre Estate vineyard exclusive to L’Ecole. The vineyard was planted utilizing biologically diverse sustainable practices and is Certified Sustainable and Certified Salmon-Safe.

This unique site – comprised of thin loess soil overlying fractured basalt – produces wines with bold, dark fruit, espresso, and tobacco notes, high natural acidity, rich texture, and excellent structure from the basalt derived minerality.

SEVEN HILLS VINEYARD

Seven Hills Vineyard, planted in the wind-blown loess of geologically young, mineral rich soils, is one of the Walla Walla Valley’s oldest and most celebrated vineyards.

L’Ecole N° 41 is a winery partner with Pepper Bridge Winery and Leonetti Cellar in this vineyard. Planted in the wind-blown loess of geologically young, mineral rich soils, it is one of the oldest and most renowned vineyards from the Walla Walla Valley. The vineyard is sustainably farmed, Certified Sustainable, and Certified Salmon-Safe.

Perigee is our cabernet sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blend, which exemplifies this vineyard’s characteristic cedary, black cherry, and richly structured elegance.

PEPPER BRIDGE VINEYARD

Pepper Bridge Vineyard, planted in the terraced remnants of ice age flood silts, is one of the Walla Walla Valley’s most reputable vineyards. L’Ecole was the first winery to produce a wine from Pepper Bridge –the Bordeaux blend, Apogee.

This original 10 acre vineyard was planted in 1991 and has been expanded over the years to 175 acres. Closer to the Blue Mountains, it is cooler and wetter than Seven Hills. At an 850 foot elevation, Pepper Bridge is planted on the terraced remnants of ice-age flood deposits. The top three feet of soils are Walla Walla silt loam, which is a wind-blown, mineral-rich loess. Underneath this layer are rich sedimentary deposits from the numerous glacial floods that inundated the Walla Walla Valley during the end of the last ice-age.

FERGUSON 2018

Since its inaugural vintage in 2011, Ferguson has quickly become L’Ecole No 41’s pre-eminent Bordeaux blend, reflecting the unique terroir expression of Walla Walla Valley’s microclimate and geological site.

With a flavor profile distinctly influenced by its volcanic basalt soil, Ferguson is a richly structured wine offering complex aromas of mineral-laced blackberries, expressive violet, black plums, and sandalwood. Layers of fruit and espresso are framed by lifted tannins, integrated with graphite and crushed rocks on the palate. Precise and structured, Ferguson’s pronounced natural acidity carries through to a satiny yet firm finish.

PERIGEE 2018

Estate Perigee captures the essence of Seven Hills Vineyard’s characteristic rich elegance, seductive aromas and earthy structure. L’Ecole hand-selects their oldest and most distinguished blocks to produce this stunning, flagship wine.

Perigee epitomizes this Estate vineyard’s distinctive cedar and dark fruit, framed by a structured elegance. It explodes with aromas of spiced blackberry and boysenberry, tobacco and licorice, lifted by floral notes of violets and Provençal herbs. Velvety on the palate, it concludes with a complex and silky finish.

APOGEE 2018

Apogee represents L’Ecole No. 41’s best effort to capture this vineyard’s distinctive and characteristic spicy bold aromas, dark fruit flavors, robust tannins, and rich structure.

This single-vineyard Bordeaux blend presents intense aromas of currants, chocolate, balsamic, cola, and dark red floral. Robust and powerful, flavors of mocha, spice, and thyme feature prominently on the palate. The finish is adorned with baking spice and wild berries, carried by fine-grained tannins.
